LEAVING THE SQUEAKING Trumpet to nestle into the covers on her bed, Vonda rushed into the room where the black cylindrical hyperbolic chamber resided, stopping dead in her tracks.
The Korthan sat on the floor, legs stretched out in front of him, blue and white hellhound resting its head in his lap as he petted its side.
âYouâre still here,â she said.
The hellhound raised its head and the man pushed himself to his feet, biceps bulging, back muscles rippling. She fought the urge to touch him, to feel those muscles beneath her palmsâ
âYou locked us in here,â he said.
She locked them in there? How?
Sleep sequence commencing in six microns.
The silver rings on her arms began to glow.
The hellhound let out a loud yawn, resting its head back down on its paws. How could the beast be so calm?
âWhat is happening to me?â It was impossible to keep the panic from her voice. âWhere is my ship?â
If she could just return to her ship and get to a human colony, she could get some answers.
âThis is your ship,â the man said, as if that was the most obvious explanation. âHe said youâd rememberââ
Who said sheâd remember? Remember what?
The last thing she remembered was being knocked off course during the Battle of Mogha, her ship low on fuel, climbing into her stasis tube with no hope of rescue.
That was ten years ago. The baritone voice in her head was soft and empathetic.
Vondaâs heart sank to her stomach, head feeling flushed, thousands of tiny pinpricks stabbing beneath her skin.
She was in stasis for ten years? Ten years?
Where was everybody now? Her superiors, her friendsâ
Why didnât the HCA retrieve her ship?
Because theyâre heartless bastards. That sinister hellhound reading her mind againâ
Her eyes locked with the Korthan. But, then again, this man was reading her mind too, wasnât he?
âI am, yes,â he said out loud.
Dread filled her. They had captured her and performed some kind of experiment, making her an instrument for their bidding.
âWe lost the war,â she said, voice nearly a whisper, shoulders slumping as she resigned herself to that fact. âYouâre controlling me.â
âNo, the humans won,â he said. Then his eyebrows knitted. âAnd Iâm not controlling you. I donât know how I could.â
The humans won? Her heart rejoiced and then she was hit with a deep sadness, anger, regret and remorse that were not her own, feelings from the presences behind both voices in her head.
Pulling her arms against her stomach, she suddenly felt immensely guilty.
Good. At least you have the grace to feel guilty. It was the female voice, the voice of the hellhound.
âWhy do you keep challenging me?â Vonda said to the air. âWho are you?â
The presence in the voice went away, leaving sadness behind.
âYouâre hearing another voice,â Târen said.
âYes,â she breathed.
âThatâs your mogha companion, Dârrie,â he said.
Mogha? As in the Battle of Mogha? Maybe it was another word for âhellhound.â The similarity of the word to the uninhabited planet Mogha probably had a similar meaning, maybe something like âhellworld.â
âWhat did you do to me?â Vondaâs voice hitched as a glowing wire rose from the middle port on her right arm.
